So, I got sick again. Nasty head cold. Spent most of my vacation days sleeping, whilst on a lot of cold medicine. The plus side was that it helped knock the edge off of the transfer of power that occurred over the weekend. By Saturday, the grotesque pageantry that is the current regime was already lying about how many people attended/ viewed the inauguration (hint: far less than they claim). And then the defended that lie by presenting the term “alternative facts”. We’re deep diving into Orwell now, friends. The USDA and the EPA have been directed to not communicate with congress, the press, or really anyone outside of the White House and the executive orders have been flying gouging away at anything good that’s happened in the last 8+ years. This president is punitive and petty. Already there’s a list of agencies that are on the chopping block and most of them relate to Arts, Humanities, Public Education, minority protections (which means my career is in jeopardy). The Free Press is also at risk, not only from the “press conferences” where an angry man comes out and yells lies at the reporters, but this president is removing any press that he doesn’t like from the equation and “press conferences” will be invite only.
Meanwhile, everywhere in the country, there was a huge response to the Women’s March. Pink hats and defiant turnouts that dwarfed the Inauguration (so much so that apparently there is a photo of the Women’s March that is being hung in the White House that claims it’s the Inauguration). Of course, there is already infighting about whether this march was inclusive enough and why weren’t all of these people turning up for all of the BLM events. It’s disheartening to listen to us tear each other down instead of build on the momentum. I keep hearing “you’re not being angry right” when it should just be a constant refrain of “this is not normal, this is wrong.” We’re all in the shit now, some worse than others, but baby, this is going to be bad for everyone in the end.
I’m going to follow up this post with a progress post. I didn’t get nearly the amount of personal projects done that I wanted (that would be one of the down sides to the whole getting sick thing) but I did accomplish something. That friends, is for a more positive follow up to this state of the shit entry.
P.S. My take: it is always right to punch a nazi. If you can hit ’em in the face, even better. If you can do it on camera so that it goes viral, priceless.
More later …
