Painting: Roller Grrl

I haven’t named my most recent painting yet. I’ve had an idea to do a series of Roller Girl paintings and this one was painted with the intention of entering it into competition for the MN State Fair this year. Usually, I paint really fast and complete a painting in one or two sittings. I’ve been trying to slow down a little more, take my time and do more washes. It’s a different process for me, but in this image anyway, I think it really paid off.

I recorded the process for this one on Instagram and here are the stages:

Sketch book layout.
Pencilling in the image.
Doing an initial background wash and adding texture with salt.
A little more base color.
Starting to work in some details. More glazes.
More detail work. Also adding graphic elements to make this scene stand out.
Painting is nearly done now. Added a few more glazes, punched up some details, and added some more to the background to give a cosmic look. More salt as well to add additional texture.
Tapes off. Final image.

The image is about 14 x 19, painted on paper that is 15 x 20. I still need to scan it (and it’ll probably be cropped a little bit–I think my scanner’s max scan is 13 x 19.
