“There’s no running away from what I am.”

I’ve just finished the second season of Penny Dreadful (I understand that season three was a bit of a roller coaster and that I may not like how things ultimately conclude). But this was a good season, gobbled up over the last three days. The theme seems to be that we’re all monsters and the beautiful are the most monstrous.

The mood of this show permeates dread, even in the quietest moments. And all of the reveals were so very perfect. Nightwalkers, evil witches, were the primary antagonists for this season (and oh what a perfect design for the witches in their true form), but everyone proved to be their own antagonist as well. Compassion and cruelty alternated throughout. In the end, the most wicked were the only happy ones (or at least they were gleeful) and a gloom hung over everyone else. Things said, things done …

“And tomorrow?”
“I promise you, we’ll be less afraid.”
“I need to think. Forgive me.”
“I do.”

More later …
